ARC
Annual Picnic and Summer Carnival - July 30, 2006
The ponies are always a big hit at the ARC Annual Picnic and
Summer Carnival, and this year was no exception. Eagle, Sarg, and Frank
brought bright smiles to many faces as the participants at the Picnic/Summer
Carnival enjoyed walking the ponies around the track located on the grounds
of the Oregon School for the Blind.
Camp
Tapawingo - June 15, 2006
It was out into the woods west of Falls City for a camp sponsored
by Partnerships in Community Living. Here is what one of our youth volunteers
had to say about last year's visit:
This is
my second year of going to Camp Tapawingo
with Miss Peggy and her ponies. We took Benny, Eagle, and Dakota. While
Benny and Eagle got petted and brushed, Dakota gave cart rides which
earned a lot of smiles. I was walking Benny around that day, and all
the people who were there were very sweet and loved seeing the ponies.
One special person, in my eyes, who really enjoyed it the most was Garth.
People came to see the ponies and then left, but Garth kept coming back.
He loved the ponies, and that just kept a smile on my face the whole
day!
I love this program, and I know I’ll always remember it. All of
my equine knowledge is because of one person, Miss Peggy. Thank you.

Personal Ponies Eagle and Benny were reunited for a visit with families
from the Oregon Family Support Network (OFSN) on a sunny evening last
April. Eagle, who lives at the main Personal Ponies barn in Independence,
and Benny, who is the Corvallis community pony, traveled together to join
the families at a meeting at Lincoln School in Corvallis. Family Support
Network friends in June. For more information on Benny and the Corvallis

2005
Activities:
Hoofbeats
for Harvest
To again make this holiday season a little brighter for families less
fortunate, Personal Ponies and the Personal Ponies 4-H Club held a food
drive. "Hoofbeats for Harvest" had drop-off sites located at
Roth's Lancaster and Roth’s Vista Market in Salem, Oregon. We collected
443 pounds of food and $97.00 for Marion-Polk Food Share on Saturday,
November 19, 2005, in three hours. To the delight of many, we had equine
representatives of Personal Ponies on-site.
Fourth
Annual Open Barn
Our Fourth Annual Open Barn was held Sunday, October 16, 2005. Everyone
had fun choosing the Cutest, Coolest, Funniest, Most Regal, Most Enthusiastic,
and Most Original Costumes that our young volunteers had created for their
favorite pony and themselves. Along with pony fun, games, refreshments,
and pony cart rides, we had highlights of the year and volunteer recognition
with several special people being recognized for their dedication to our
program. We want to again thank each and every one of you who made this
year for Personal Ponies such a success. Special thanks to Salem Trophy
for suppling this year's special awards.
Other
2005 Activities:
We had
a wonderful experience when we helped with a recent pony visit at Alterra
Clare Bridge. Many of the residents there invited their
grandchildren and great-grandchildren to join in the special day. It
touched our hearts to see the smiles on their faces –not just
the children but the older residents too. They asked so many questions
about the ponies and enjoyed petting them.
My daughter, Makayla, had a great time as she gained practice answering
questions from the adults and guiding the ponies on the kiddie rides.
One thing I observed about the children: once they were on a pony they
became so serious about “riding a horse” that they were
all business. You could see it made them feel so “grown up”
to get to ride! One little girl’s mother mentioned her daughter
has always loved ponies, but she has never been able to ride a real
pony before. It was such a special trip for her. A fun day was definitely
enjoyed by all. -- Emily
June 16th,
we traveled into the woods west of Falls City to Camp
Tapawingo for a camp sponsored by Partnerships in Community
Living. We understand the weather hadn't been the best but it cleared
just before we arrived. It didn't start to sprinkle again until we left
which provide the perfect opportunity to give pony cart rides to all the
campers who wanted to participants and plenty of time to brush, pet, and
walk ponies.
On a warm
Saturday last May, Sarg and Eagle brought forth many bright smiles, both
young and old, at Oregon State University
College of Veterinary Medicine's Pet Day. After watching
the opening ceremonies of the small animal hospital, Sarg and I began
walking around the festivities. We never made it more than twenty feet
before someone asked about the "really big dog" politely following me
around. Whenever we stopped, children dragged mothers in our direction
and asked to pet the pony. I believed the excitement would ease up, but
it only continued to build throughout the two hours I had either Sarg
or Eagle walking around. My own smile grew with each delighted grin on
a child or parent's face. The warm reception of Sarg and Eagle was incredibly
inspirational. I am eager to open the world of Personal Ponies to the
Corvallis community. It became apparent to me that they will quickly become
a much loved and appreciated part of our town. Each day in Corvallis,
children are struggling to overcome daily challenges placed before them
by physical and mental disabilities. With the support of a furry friend,
I hope to see the same big smiles on their faces as those I saw at Pet
Day. I hope to give them an opportunity to help provide care for a pony
so they might gain confidence in their abilities. With Personal Ponies
like Sarg and Eagle we will make a difference in young lives around Corvallis.
